Yellowstone To yukon conservation initiative

Climate Change Challenge: less water, worse droughts

Grant Award: $224,624; Year Awarded: 2017

The land use changes the Kootenai Valley along the US/Canada border in North Idaho has undergone for decades has compromised the ecosystem’s ability to adapt to the hotter, drier climate conditions forecasted for the region. The Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative will conduct work to restore ephemeral flood cycles and ponds, plant native trees and create forest pollinator habitat. These interventions will restore ecological function to 250 acres of degraded forested lowland in Idaho, to increase the resilience to climate change in a linkage area key to continental connectivity, and promote our approach as a model for the Y2Y region.
