methow beaver project

grant award: $298,727; year awarded: 2021

The Upper Columbia River watersheds are climate refugia for native species and species shifting north as a result of climate change-driven warming. Restoring 276 hectares of degraded areas and 23 km of streams in this system is essential for water storage, water quality, carbon storage, and biodiversity. The Methow Beaver Project will implement process-based restoration activities, including installation of woody structures, riparian planting, and beaver translocation. The efficacy of these approaches to restoring streams severely degraded by wildfire and debris flow will be evaluated to better inform climate adaptation practices. Additionally, the carbon sequestration and storage potential of the approaches will be monitored and assessed.
