Coniferous forests in OR and CA provide habitat for a range of wildlife species and a number of other ecosystem services, including carbon storage, water retention, and slope stabilization. However, these forests, like many in this region, are threatened by massive climate-driven wildfires. Post-Fire Microbial Inoculation (PFMI), the process of adding beneficial microbes to soils post-fire, is a promising method for helping ecosystems adapt to this growing climate threat and increase carbon sequestration. This project team will implement the PFMI technique to restore soils, provide favorable conditions for post-fire ecosystem recovery, and evaluate the effectiveness of this approach.
